Admittedly, the topic of racing bikes with electric motors is not entirely uncontroversial. In our opinion, the basic prerequisite for dealing with the new technology is to play with open cards. If a manufacturer like Orbea then implements the topic so discreetly and perfectly, then it's more than worth a try. First impression: Would you have thought that the racers in the Gain series would be equipped with an e-drive? Hardly. Because the extremely compact Mahle motor is hidden almost invisibly in the rear wheel hub. The same goes for the slim battery in the down tube, which is hardly any bulkier than any other modern road bike. And the best thing about it is that you can be sporty on the road with an e-drive. This is because the Gain always rides as smoothly as a normal road bike, even if you ride faster than the maximum supported speed of 25 km/h. The Mahle motor blends in and out of the drivetrain so naturally that you only need its help when you really need it.

One of the highlights of the Gain M30i is the OMR carbon frame. Thanks to Orbea's experience in professional racing, you benefit from an outstanding symbiosis of aerodynamics, stiffness and low weight. The modern version of the highly acclaimed 105 groupset is the new benchmark in the mid-range segment. The wireless transmission of shifting impulses ensures incomparably fast and precise gear changes. You can even use the Gain as a gravel bike, as the frame and fork accept tires up to 35 millimetres wide.

Mahle X-motors - The invisible power from the hub

Mahle motors are among the most compact and lightest e-bike drive systems on the market. The motor, battery and control unit together weigh just around three kilos. There are two versions, which are used depending on the Gain series: For the aluminum frame (D), Orbea relies on the Mahle X35+ motor (40 Nm) in combination with a 248 Wh battery. The carbon models come with a Mahle X20 motor (55 Nm) and a 350 Wh battery, which can be increased by 171 watt hours with an optional range extender battery. In this combination, up to 4000 meters in altitude and enormous ranges are possible with the lowest level of support. But even if the motor is pushed harder, you can still complete extended day tours. With the Mahle system, puncture servicing is child's play: thanks to a contact strip on the rear dropout, the wheel can be fitted and removed in no time at all, just like on a conventional road bike.
