UDH is the abbreviation for Universal Derailleur Hanger. It is an attempt to standardise the design of a derailleur hanger and eliminate hundreds of existing standards. Today, each bicycle brand designs its own derailleur hanger and may have several incompatible derailleur hangers for its own models. If you apply this idea to hundreds of bike brands, you have a very big problem if you as a rider break your derailleur hanger and need to find a replacement part. The UDH is designed to simplify this. If you have a bike with a UDH-compatible frame and your derailleur hanger breaks, you can pick up a replacement UDH derailleur hanger at almost any bike shop.
The UDH is an axle-specific derailleur hanger that is similar to some existing derailleur hangers but has some performance improvements. For example, one feature prevents the chain from falling off the smallest sprocket. If you hit a stone with the rear derailleur, the UDH rotates backwards to protect the frame and rear derailleur. The design of the UDH corresponds exactly to the specifications of all current MTB rear derailleurs on the market today. So not only does it work with any rear derailleur, but these rear derailleurs are already optimised for the UDH.
